Ecological and Social Stories from Altab Ali Park
Creative workshop exploring the social, cultural and ecological history, legacy and current community of Altab Ali park in Whitechapel, East London.
Freya co-facilitated this workshop with university students in East London. The project was designed as an introduction and exploration for first year students, to the area around the university.
Initially the students explored the park, walking around it and recording species' counts. Then, they investigated the textures, patterns and material in the park - taking rubbings of trees and leaves, drawing, collaging. Finally, they drew the different streams of ecological, visual and sensory data together into a collective artwork.
This piece charted their discovery of, and communing with, the park and the many communities that live within or around it.
